Welcome to the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering

"I am pleased to introduce our School to you. In the School’s website you will find a wealth of information on undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses, research interests and opportunities, industrial collaboration and, of course, some details on the members of staff from our School."
Professor Peter Stansby
Head of School
The School of Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering was formed in 2004, following the merger of three former departments within UMIST and Victoria University of Manchester. We have over 80 members of academic staff in the School supported by dedicated administration and technical support groups.
The School has over 1000 undergraduates, 400 taught full-time and part-time postgraduate students and 200 postgraduate research students. We have undergraduate courses in mechanical, aerospace and civil engineering and a number of specialist MSc courses.
Our graduates obtain a thorough understanding of engineering principles coupled with excellent practical and personal transferable skills. All our graduates are held in high regard by industry finding rewarding work in all engineering sectors.
We have a commitment to provide the best experience for our undergraduate and postgraduate students. All undergraduates are guided throughout their course by a personal tutor and are taught by experienced and dedicated staff. For postgraduate researchers, there are induction programmes, research seminars and career development programmes, with students having a dedicated space in our new state-of-the-art research villages.
The School performed very well in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) with 70% of the School's activities being assessed as at least `Internationally Excellent', with the other 30% being classed as `Internationally Recognised'. This is an excellent achievement considering the School was only formed in 2004, and highlights our overall research environment which attracts leading scholars from around the world. A significant proportion of our research is practically based, and funded by industry, which ensures that teaching on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is up-to date and world-leading.
I look forward to welcoming you to School.
