Course information

Date: 2012 To be decided

Venue: University of Manchester (Central Manchester Maps and Travel)

What is the course about?

This course is intended for practising structural engineers, consultants and university lecturers.
The course aims to develop an intuitive understanding of structural concepts through using physical models and appropriate practical examples together with brief theories. The course is
based on the book, Seeing and Touching Structural Concepts, written by Dr Ji and Dr Bell, two
of the course presenters.

Who should attend?

Practising engineers who wish to effectively enhance their understanding of structural concepts
and try to use structural concepts in their work to achieve more efficient designs and to solve
practical problems innovatively. It will also benefit University lecturers who teach structural subjects to undergraduates.

Course Content

The course will cover a number of concepts from statics to dynamics which have applications in
practice. The topics include concepts for designing stiffer structures, resonance, free vibration,
stability, horizontal movements of structures due to vertical loads, human body models in structural vibration, and structural concepts and practice. Each of the topics will be illustrated using a brief theory, demonstration of physical models and appropriate engineering examples where concepts play dominant roles. How to study structural concepts will also be explored.

Course Presenters:

Dr Tianjian Ji (Course Leader), Dr Adrian Bell and Dr Partha Mandal.
