Research degrees
The School is a leading provider of
postgraduate research programmes and can lay claim to some of the most important discoveries in the field of engineering.
Research degrees at The British University in Dubai (BUiD) awarded by The University of Manchester
A PhD is the target of most postgraduate students who relish the opportunity to undertake a research project with intellectual, scientific, industrial or commercial challenges. Those from industrial backgrounds may also find it possible to partake in this level of graduate work, which is of particular value to the individuals training and development.
Depending on your education and work experience you may register directly for a PhD Degree, however some students will initially register for an MPhil degree, where after one year if satisfactory progress is made you will progress onto the second year of a PhD.
For both a direct PhD and MPhil-PhD degree the period of study would be three years full-time or the part-time equivalent. Students would also be permitted to register as a writing-up student for 12 months at the end of the degree to complete your dissertation.
This programme route is also available as a split-site option, which enables overseas students to split their studies between the UK and their home country. If a student would like to take this route a supervisor must be appointed in the UK and overseas, and confirmation of free time and study plan must be approved by both supervisors.

Further information on current PhD projects can be found on the Research Group and Expert Group pages.
An MPhil Degree provides research opportunities if you wish to qualify for a master's degree by the submission of a research thesis. This should detail the results of original work in any one of the Schools' research fields. The total time required to complete this programme is a minimum of 12 months full-time or the equivalent part-time study. You will also be permitted to register as a writing-up student for 12 months at the end of the degree to complete your dissertation.
These programmes will normally consist of a 120 credit research project and an additional 60 credits of taught content, creating a standard 180 credit Postgraduate MSc Programme. The duration of the programme will be one year.
The programme is divided into two phases. In semester one (September-January), four taught modules to the equivalent of 60 credits are taken and assessed. These modules are chosen from a selection offered by the school from our current PG Taught programmes. The modules should be agreed by both the student and research supervisor prior to enrolment on this programme and would include a research methodology module. Upon successfully completing the taught phase of the programme, students will progress onto the research phase to work full-time on the chosen research project (February-August). This programme is therefore designed to allow students to combine masters level taught modules with research skills and training development.
A list of taught courses on offer for the MSc by Research will be available here shortly. If you would like some idea of the optional modules possibly on offer please take a look at our Taught Degrees pages.
The Engineering Doctorate in Engineering for Manufacture and Nuclear Engineering is a flagship programme which provides the opportunity for outstanding engineers to work in industry while obtaining a doctorate level qualification. This programme route ensures engineers, who aspire to senior management roles in industry, are able to gain practical experience of working in industry whilst expanding their knowledge through further study. A typical Engineering Doctorate lasts four years and is built around a research proposal which is developed by the University and Industrial partners.
If you are interested in applying for an EngD placement, details of EngD projects on offer can be found at the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Approximately ten projects are offered each year and interested applicants should contact the relevant academic advertising the project.

Our unique MEnt programmes provide students with the latest knowledge in a number of subject areas, together with generic enterprise skills necessary for the launch and growth of a small company. The MEnt programmes aim to produce engineering entrepreneurs with a theoretical and practical knowledge that will allow them to analyse and investigate problems at an advanced level. The programme is multi-disciplinary and is modular in content (two units per semester) with a one-year long enterprise project, comprising both the subject and enterprise exploitation elements.
