Project abstract

Organisations today function in complex and dynamic environments which exert continual pressure to change and compete (Omari, 2007). During the past few years, forms of organizations evolved in many shapes. Globalisation and advances in technological sophistication as well as the changing nature of work influence how companies are structured and where employees work (Power, 2004, Colakoglu et al, 2006 and Friedman, 2007).

HRM policies and practices are claimed to embrace and promote new approaches to management (Ezzamel et al, 1996 and Hueman et al, 2006). In their study of Supply Chain Management, Croom et al (2000) reviewed the supply chain management literature and noted that HRM is mainly confined to rewards and incentivisation, and virtually none on other HRM aspects such as recruitment, deployment and the development of competences.

Literature on HRM practices different forms of organisations in business is lacking. Huemann et al (2006) concluded that HRM practices are missing at project based companies thus need to be conceptualised accordingly and a framework be built. In addition, there exists a missing link between Project Management literature and HRM literature (Huemann et al, 2006). Thus, this study will examine human resources management (HRM) practices across firms and will further study implications for practice and the challenges that confront such practices.
