Thermal Power and Fluid Engineering
Example dissertation project
KK-1 Shock tube studies using surface flow mapping techniques (IND).
Supervisor Dr K Kontis
The study of unsteady and moving shock waves is of fundamental importance in wide variety of fluid dynamic applications including high speed vehicles, industrial processes, exhaust systems, combustors etc. A modified shock tube arrangement will be employed producing tailor-made shock waves propagating downstream and interfering with a variety of geometric arrangements. The induced flow field will be visualized using high speed schlieren photography and pressure sensitive paints will be employed to map the surface flow patterns and pressure distributions.
The results will be compared with
pressure tapping measurements and analytical solutions. The research
forms part of an on-going investigation with an industrial partner.
