Thermal Power and Fluid Engineering
Example dissertation project
CFD simulation of flow parallel to a heated rod bundle.
Supervisor Prof D R Laurence
Turbulent air flows in the gaps between heated circular cylinders of a heat exchanger of reactor. The solid rods can be more or less closely packed, with eventually ribs or grooves to enhance heat transfer.
Experimental data is available and a Large Eddy Simulation is ongoing at Manchester for the basic geometry (S. Rolfo).
The MSc project will consist of evaluating the accuracy of RANS models on one known configuration, then seeking to optimise the geometry of the exchanger (increase heat transfer without increasing the friction). Further information
