Localised Fires

A compartment fire should be taken as localised or pre-flashover fire when flashover is unlikely to occur. Depending on the size of the fire and the compartment, a localised fire may or may not impinge on the ceiling of the compartment. The temperature in the fire flame and plume and the surrounding gas are not uniform, and need to be determined separately. This is the main difference from a post-flashover fire where the temperature assumed to be uniform within the fire compartment.

Annex C (informative) of BSEN1991-1-2 provides a simple calculation approach for determining localised fires of compartments which will be described as follows.
