A wide range of generic and proprietary materials are available to provide fire protection to structural steelwork. The choice of the fire protection system is generally determined by the following factors: appearance, durability, environmental factors, space, construction programme and cost. One of the well established methods of protection is the use of the generic materials comprising concrete, brick or block, gypsum plaster and certain types of plasterboard.
