2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE)
The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering performed extremely well during the 2008 RAE. This is particularly pleasing considering the School was only formed in 2004, following the merger of UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester. As part of the merger the School underwent a £8.5M infrastructure refurbishment programme which was completed in 2007. Although this refurbishment programme, unavoidable, provided some disruption it has ultimately provided the School with an excellent environment and solid foundation to enhance world-leading, multi-disciplinary research.
With the vision of the School embedded within multi-disciplinary research its activities were assessed under ‘General Engineering and Mineral & Mining Engineering’.
The 2008 RAE rated 70% of the research activities within the School as at least ‘Internationally Excellent’.
