Strategy
The Group is intended to be a showcase for world-class multidisciplinary science and technology of benefit to the University and the Industry on a global scale. The Group specializes in the investigation of complicated flow phenomena, problems and interactions, and the development and application of advanced, novel flow measurement concepts, techniques and devices that can produce comprehensive and high accuracy flow and thermal field data of benefit to the Aerospace, Automotive, Nuclear, Naval, Power Generation and other engineering sectors.
While computational modelling has replaced a lot of the more traditional experimental research, advanced, specialized experimental investigations will continue to be at the heart of the modern design process, by shedding light on complex flow and thermal phenomena that are critical to the continuing development and validation of computational models.
There are huge challenges to be met in multidisciplinary experimental flow physics. These include the investigation of complicated flows such as unsteady, short duration or high speed flows, shock waves, hypersonics, micro/nano-fluidics, rotating cooling flows, natural mixed convection flows and high temperature flows. Even more challenging is the investigation of multiphase flows, free surface flows, reacting flows, combustion processes, flow and acoustics; bio-physiological flows, fluid-structure interactions and flow induced vibrations.
