Before applying for PhD
Proposed research project
The Management of Projects Group has a large PhD community. This means that doctoral researchers benefit from working in a very dynamic inter-disciplinary environment. However, places are competitive, dependent on the quality and fit of your proposed research project.
Before applying
If you are intending to apply for PhD, MPhil, MSc by research, EngD or MEnt project, please see
in your area of research.
Information required
In order to assess your suitability for the degree, and to allow us to identify a suitable supervisor, please provide the following documents:
- All of your academic transcripts to date.
- Your curriculum vitae.
- A research proposal: title, the research problem, aim, objectives, research questions, proposed methodology, deliverables and beneficiaries. See research topics available.
- The names of two academic staff in the Management of Projects Group who would appear suitable to supervise your proposed project.
- How you intend to fund your fee and subsistence.
If your proposal is accepted
If your proposal is accepted, which will normally involve an informal interview (telephone or Skype) with potential supervisors, you will be formally invited to complete the University of Manchester On-line Application Form and submit a second, more detailed research proposal setting out:
- the rationale behind the proposal;
- current access to research data and requirements for data over the period of study;
- a short review of the contemporary literature in the field of study and
- a list of 3 recent PhDs published that relate to the field of study proposed (please use the abstracts database at www.theses.com).
In some cases we will be able to accept new students and in some we may suggest registration in the not too distant future. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to make an offer.
