The School of MACE is a world-leading centre for SPH research.

Scope of Research:

The School of MACE is a world-leading centre for SPH research, particularly in:

  • Application to free-surface flows, coastal flows, shallow water, fluid-structure interaction

  • Use of novel computing hardware such as Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for accelerating SPH simulations

  • Developing fundamental formulations.

  • Development of schemes for multi-phase flows

  • Weakly Compressible & Incompressible SPH

  • Depth-Averaged formulations, boundary conditions

Key Expertise and Applications of our research include:

  • Wave breaking and impact on structures such as coastal breakwaters
  • Flooding simulations
  • Marine flows including wave energy devices and floating objects Coastal hydrodynamics / overtopping / structures
  • Debris flows
  • Multi-phase flows (air / water)
  • Nuclear sludge
  • Tsunami generation
