Studying at Manchester

The University of Manchester was created on 1st October 2004 by bringing together the Victoria University of Manchester (VUM) and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), two of Britain's most distinguished universities. Our vision for the future is the creation of an academic powerhouse that will attract the best students, teachers and researchers in the world.

The School offers a wide range of undergraduate courses in Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering which prepare students for Chartered status, the highest professional level. All our degree courses at The University of Manchester are honours degrees and have a strong base of engineering science but also gives students a good practical grounding and knowledge. Because staff are actively involved in research, the teaching is constantly developing to reflect the advances in practice, allowing students to benefit from the wide and varied expertise within the School.

In each of the Engineering subjects the first year is common, which offers the flexibility of changing course within the same subject area, or to add a specialism as the course progresses. Your study time is spent involved in active enquiry-based learning as well as traditional lectures and tutorials. We also help students run their own Engineering Society, which organises industrial visits, lectures by guest speakers, a careers fair, sports and social functions.

How do I apply for Study abroad?

Currently we only offer the opportunity to study overseas on the Civil Engineering With Study in North America.

Once you are registered as a student at the School, students on these degree programmes will automatically be invited to meetings to help them apply to the relevant partner institution and prepare them for their time abroad. If you are not already on such a programme but would like to transfer to the 'With Study in Europe' or 'With Study in North America' version, then you should contact your personal tutor as soon as possible to discuss this option.

For degree programmes without a compulsory period abroad - students on these degree programmes may, if they are not involved in an industrial placement year, opt to apply for a one semester academic placement abroad on the Worldwide Exchange Programme, run by the Study Abroad Unit.

The first step would be to research the courses offered at the various partner institutions - you will need to match up your Manchester courses for the semester you'll miss with equivalent classes at the host institution. Once you have put together a proposed programme of study for one or more of the partner universities, you should arrange to speak to your Programme Director to seek his/her approval for your application. With your Programme Director's permission, you will then need to submit an official application form to the Study Abroad Unit. Application forms be only be obtained by attending one of the Study Abroad Unit's Information Sessions, which are held throughout November / early December.

The deadline for submission is December / January.

You can go abroad either in the second year of a three year degree programme (in which case you'd need to apply in your first year), or in the third year of a four year degree programme (in which case you'd apply in your second year).
