Funding available
As one the country's leading centres of research and learning, The University of Manchester is committed to attracting and supporting the very best students. If you have the talent and ability, we want to make sure that you have the opportunity to study here regardless of your financial circumstances.
More than a third of our students will receive bursaries of up to £3,000 per year and many will be offered even more generous support.
Students who are eligible will be able to choose how they receive this support – either as a cash bursary or as discount on their fees or accommodation bill.

The Manchester Bursary is available to any student who is registered on an eligible* undergraduate degree course at The University of Manchester and who has had a full financial assessment carried out by Student Finance. This bursary is additional to the government package of maintenance grants.

The School offers a number of Scholarships to eligible candidates. Students apply for this scholarship during their first semester at the University, more information on the application process will be provided at this time.
National Scholarship Programme
The University of Manchester has decided that awards funded through the National Scholarship Programme will be identical in length, value and criteria to its own Manchester Bursary. As such, some students who are to be awarded the Manchester Bursary will be funded through the National Scholarship programme for Year 1 only. The National Scholarship Programme is being introduced in 2012 to help students from lower income backgrounds to go to university. It will provide students with a household income of less than £25,000 with £3,000 in support.
Opportunity Manchester Scholarships
Opportunity Manchester Scholarships of £1,000 per year will be awarded to students meeting either of the following criteria:
- They have successfully applied for a place at The University of Manchester having completed the Manchester Access Programme (MAP) for local Year 12/Year 13 students;
- They are under the age of 25 and are currently or have been in public care for a minimum of three months.
The School offers a number of Scholarships to eligible candidates. Students will be informed whether they are required to apply for a scholarship or whether it will be paid automatically to them. Eligible students will generally receive scholarships during their first semester at the University, more information on the application process will be provided shortly after registration.
Success Scholarship Up to £1,000 per year of study regardless of income to students gaining A*AA grades at A level on Mechanical, Aerospace & Civil Engineering programmes; - A* must be in Maths.
Whitworth Scholarship £4,000 a year for all our courses. The Scholarship is for applicants with at least 2 years apprenticeship experience who are planning to embark on, or have already commenced, any undergraduate engineering degree-level programme normally at MEng level. Further information
Andrews Scholarship Up to £5,000 a year for Civil or Mechanical Engineering applicants. Selection is based on academic excellence, residence within the Greater Manchester region, financial need and a commitment to engineering. Further information
Mechanical Engineering Scholarships
- BP Undergraduate Scholarships - £2,000 per year for first and second year students. Students are selected on the basis of their first year examination results and the content of their application. BP Opportunity Award is to help support the final year of a four year masters course. Awards and funding will be given to successful candidates through an application and selection process. These scholars will also receive a guaranteed place at a BP assessment centre in their final year. Further information.
Scholarships for students from the Manchester area
- Sir William Mather Engineering Entrance - £1,000 a year for all our courses for students from the Manchester area who achieve good grades at A level or equivalent* to study an undergraduate degree course with Engineering in the title. Further information.
International Excellence Undergraduate Scholarship - £2,000 a year for all our courses for students who have demonstrated high performance in their High School final year examinations (or equivalent) and the academic reference on their UCAS form and have accepted an undergraduate programme in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at The University of Manchester as their firm choice.
