Why Engineering?

The Telegraph about jobs in engineering

Over the next four years, the UK will need 96,300 new engineers and scientists just to replace those who are retiring. more

The Engineering Skills Council (Semta), The Telegraph 26 March 2012

Engineering is an essential part of everyday life. Computers, cars, aeroplanes, roads, bridges and medical equipment to name just a few, all owe their existence to engineers. Furthermore there would be no internet, no building, no electricity, no light bulbs and, if you have printed this out, there would have been no printers. All of the above merely scratch the surface of the massive impact that Engineers have had and for every individual product we use the contribution from engineers is vast. Engineers are concerned with research, development, design, testing, troubleshooting, manufacturing and the operation of virtually everything.

Traditionally Engineering is separated into a number of different disciplines: Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil, Electrical and Chemical Engineering. Manchester University offers accredited degree courses in all of these disciplines. Future generations will depend on your expertise, and the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering can give you the sound base from which to continue to develop your skills in providing a complex infrastructure for a modern society.
