We’re passionate about engaging secondary school and sixth form students in engineering as they take their next steps in education.
Using our excellent facilities and our academic expertise in the Department of MACE, we want to show students that choosing a career in engineering can open up a world of possibility.
From interactive engineering days for Key Stage 3 and 4 students, to our work experience programme for sixth formers, we have a range of activities for students to get involved in.

Activities and programmes
Big Engineering
Do you know Year 10 pupils who might like to know why we find engineering so exciting? In Big Engineering days, pupils are welcomed on to campus to hear our experts give an overview of engineering and then take part in problem solving workshops using specialist engineering equipment.
These exciting interactive activities are led by academics and PhD students actively involved in engineering research and assisted by current undergraduate students at The University of Manchester.
Engineering a Difference Day - calling all future female engineers!
Engineering a Difference Day is specifically designed to expose Key Stage 3 girls to the positive impact of engineers in our society by raising awareness and breaking down stereotypes.
Pupils have the opportunity to come to campus and get involved with a series of hands-on engineering challenges, and have chat with some of our inspirational female engineers.
MACE Work Experience Programme
Our exciting and newly developed Work Experience Programme gives Year 10, 11 and 12 students the opportunity to attend a rich and diverse five-day programme of activities here at The University of Manchester.
This programme provides insight into the skills and knowledge required to study and work within Engineering, and helps aspiring engineers to develop new skills which will boost their applications into Higher Education.

Manchester Distance Access Scheme

The Manchester Distance Access Scheme is an online access programme for students who are currently holding an offer from The University of Manchester for a place on a selection of courses commencing in September 2019.
For our engineering scheme, participants will be provided with a number of technical problems to solve, covering a range of engineering applications. These are designed to allow students to see how mathematical techniques and analysis that they have already learnt at sixth form or college can be applied to solve practical engineering-related problems.
All the material will be provided online via Blackboard, the University’s online learning resource. An initial set of example problems and detailed model solutions will be provided first. This will be followed by a practice test, which will be marked and solutions subsequently made available. Then a final test will be marked and used to assess the students' progress in the academic element.
Not only is this a great opportunity for pupils to gain a valuable insight into engineering and develop their skills, but successful candidates will also be eligible for a reduced grade offer from The University of Manchester.

Raising Aspirations - what different types of engineering are there?
Interested in engineering but not sure which type of engineering is your cup of tea? Our Raising Aspirations days help Key Stage 5 students understand the differences between Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, and demonstrates how a degree in Engineering can lead on to many exciting careers.
This event is divided into three exciting days. On the first day, a University of Manchester member of staff will visit the college or sixth form to present on careers in engineering and studying at the Department of MACE, followed by an introductory activity. The students will then visit the university twice and take part in a range of activities from our three disciplines to get an idea of what it’s like to study Engineering at The University of Manchester.
