Our staff and students are in the vanguard of three scientific areas, and are making notable contributions to several others.
Our three key areas are:
- Computational fluid dynamics and direct numerical simulation with Professor Domique Laurence, Dr Robert Prosser.
- Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics led by Dr Ben Rogers and Professor Peter Stansby.
- Modelling of the mechanics of materials, nuclear engineering and innovative manufacturing with Professor Mike Smith, Professor Andrey Jivkov, Dr John Francis, Professor Francis Livens (Dalton), Dr Joseph Robinson and Professor Michael Preuss (the School of Materials).
The principle theme to our work is to identify the length and time scales that dominate a particular engineering or physical phenomenon, construct appropriate models to describe the mechanisms and processes and integrate them into useful engineering tools. Often this involves the blending, or hybridisation of different analytical and modelling approaches.
