Having a degree from Manchester definitely helped me to secure my current role.  It is a top rated university that is recognised all over the world.

Assistant Contract Manager, AECOM, Kazakhstan

Securing my role

While I was an undergraduate student, I always stayed on top of what was going on in the civil and construction companies, including when the recruitment started for summer internships or graduate jobs.  I also made sure I was aware of the current projects of the companies I was considering applying to.  For AECOM, I went to the Head Office and handed in my CV.  Luckily they were currently recruiting for a graduate so I was called in interview for an interview that week, and was offered the job.

Having a degree from Manchester definitely helped me to secure my current role.  It is a top rated university that is recognised all over the world.  And my manager here in Kazakhstan is from Manchester too!

My current role

My current role is in Contracts Management, so I work on things such as drafting and evaluating contracts, working with sub contractors and also contracts termination.  As an Assistant to Contract Manager at AECOM, I also do many other things, some of which may be not even related to my qualification.  I often work on procurement and cost reconciliation tasks or quantity surveying, which is good thing since it gives me a broader idea what the business looks like and how it works.

On daily basis I work with dozens of companies that provide services for us. That’s really interesting because I could not imagine how many suppliers we work with on each individual project!  Apart from that I work a lot with our American colleagues who sometimes have different approaches in work, so that’s good experience for the future too.

My current project

I am currently working on Biological Threat Reduction (BRT) project – Central Reference Laboratory (CRL), Almaty Kazakhstan.  The Department of Defence (USA) and the Republic of Kazakhstan have mutually agreed to construct a Central Reference Laboratory on the premises of the Kazakh Science Centre for the Quarantine of Zoonotic Diseases (KSCQZD) in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The laboratory will be a state-of-the-art bio-containment building developed on a greenfield site.  The building is being designed to contain Bio Safety Pathogens at level 3 in a high risk seismic zone.

AECOM are responsible for the design adaption, construction management, quality control, construction material procurement, schedule adherence, health and safety and overall performance of the construction process in accordance with all local codes and regulations, including the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) regulations.
