A multicultural and multidisciplinary School

The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering is broad, multidisciplinary, and founded on engineering pragmatism. I have been here for 23 years, and can’t imagine being anywhere else.

The undergraduate students we attract are among the very brightest, and our postgraduates come from all over the world. Last year, one of my classes alone was made up of people from more than 20 countries.

For me, the measure of success is that students have been challenged by me, and they have challenged me in return.

Research

My research involves exploring why things go ‘wrong’ on projects and how we avoid and resolve disputes. Specifically, I look at the aetiology of commercial disputes and the techniques of dispute resolution particularly arbitration, international arbitration, adjudication and ADR methods – notably mediation.

I enjoy the opportunity to think about important issues and try to make developments that can help in the real world. I am a practising dispute resolver, and I make sure my teaching is up to date by combining academic research and real life experience.
