Professional biography

Paul graduated in Civil and Structural Engineering from the University of Bradford in 1975 initially working for Sir R McAlpine on a number of sites across the UK. Following a short period working at Cyanamid UK, Paul spent 7 years with specialist contractor Insituform. In 1985 he joined the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at UMIST as an Experimental Officer and in 1991 was promoted to Senior Experimental Officer. Since merger he has been Teaching and Research Support Manager for the School. Paul became a chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1989.
Pauls main interest is in cementitious materials and since the late 1980s has taken a particular interest in Ferrocement. He has been an active member of the International Ferrocement Society since its inception in 1988 and in 1994 hosted the Fifth International Symposium here in Manchester. In 1998 he was made a Fellow of the Society. Paul has supervised a number of PhDs on the topic together with many MSc dissertations and U/G projects. Ferrocement has, for a number of years, also been included in the MSc Structures course. Paul is currently a consultant to the American Concrete Institute (ACI) to update their documentation on Ferrocement.
Paul is coordinator for Construction Materials 1, producing a new course for the 2010 intake, as well as Construction Materials 3. He is also the School coordinator with the Faculty Foundation year.
Paul is the main contact in the School for commercial testing.
Paul has produced a significant number of research papers which have been presented at conferences worldwide.
