The University’s international reputation was the main reason behind my decision to pursue my postgraduate degree here.

The research facilities available are outstanding and encourage students to carry-out their own study with passion. The University is equipped with modern software which certainly helps the learning process. All computer clusters are easily accessible with state-of-the-art facilities.

I've had the opportunity to meet and work with classmates from around the world and from a number of different cultures and backgrounds. I've also participated in some very demanding group work projects. All the lecturers and professors are available to help with the students’ needs any time we require.

Every day is an interesting and offers a new experience at The University of Manchester, and I intend to pursue a PhD degree here when I graduate.

Dissertation

Abstract: The initiation of ductile tearing in metallic materials is related to the generation of voids ahead of a main crack upon loading. As these grow and coalesce the material behaviour ahead of the crack changes, which is described by coupled damage-plasticity models. However, for determining the conditions at initiation, it might be sufficient to use uncoupled damage models.

In my project, I will explore two such models, one based on void-growth ratio and one on damage work density and calculate the evolution of respective damage parameters. I will construct and analyse two cracked geometries with low and high constraint, respectively, and assess critically the performance of each model against available experimental data.
