Teaching methods

  • Lectures – The University has over 200 lecture theatres and lecture rooms, all of which are equipped with state of the art audio-visual equipment. Lectures make up the basis of our teaching.  Class sizes vary, depending on the level and year of study and the course units taken. Example timetables can be found on Example Programme Structure pages;
  • Tutorials – Tutorials run in parallel with lectures and aim to consolidate the concepts taught in the lecture. Our students work through the problems set by the lecturer, who is also on hand to assist students, and answer any questions they have about the lecture material;
  • Elearning – The University of Manchester uses the virtual learning environment, Blackboard 9, as the basis of its online teaching. All our courses have a dedicated Blackboard page containing lecture notes, tutorial questions and solutions, reading lists, discussion boards and past exam papers;
  • Project support – Our students receive support throughout all projects in they carry out while studying here.  All our 3rd year undergraduate students are assigned a project supervisor for their individual projects to offer one-on-one support and guidance;
  • Computer clusters and study spaces - Our computer clusters are fully licensed with all the software you will need during your time here. Students are taught to use programs such as SolidWorks, MATLAB, AutoCAD as well as programming languages C++ and FORTRAN. In response to feedback from our students we keep the clusters open, safe and secure until 11pm to allow our students to be flexible with their commitments;
  • Cafes - Both the George Begg and Pariser Buildings have recently had cafés installed at the request of our students;
  • Alan Gilbert Learning CommonsThe Alan Gilbert Learning Commons, built in 2012, is a state of the art learning environment for all students at the University of Manchester. The building was commissioned in response to feedback from students, who felt there wasn’t enough study space available on campus;

Laboratories – The School of MACE has dedicated teaching labs in both the Pariser and George Begg buildings. Our lab technicians design experiments to compliment the teaching in most of the core lecture units and feature a range of equipment and machinery for a hands-on student experience. MACE students can expect to practice techniques in areas such as:

  • Geotechnics
  • Stress analysis
  • Aerodynamics
  • Compressible flow
  • Compressible and incompressible fluid flow
  • Thermodynamics
  • Modelling and simulation

We also have our very own flight simulator in the George Begg building

John Rylands Library

Libraries - The University of Manchester has one of the largest libraries in the country and engineers at the School of MACE will find the majority of the resources they need in the recently refurbished Joule Library

Assessment methods

  • Exams – Most units are assessed by an exam in either January or May/June. The exam constitutes the majority of the overall mark, usually between 70-90%;
  • Coursework – Coursework is set for all units and usually constitutes between 10-30% of the overall mark, but varies depending on the task requirements. Some courses, such as the design courses are 100% assessed by coursework;
  • Lab based exercises and reports – Lab assessment is based on a 3 hour lab session and the submission of a short report;
  • Projects – Both individual and group project work is assessed in order to prepare students for real life engineering work where it is essential to be able to work both individually and as a team;
  • Presentations – Some units require students to present their work to an audience. The 3rd year poster presentation day sees students present their design projects both to academics and other students in the School of MACE;
